After teaching technology and design at Sheridan College for 16 years, Denni Freedman believes the design world is constantly evolving. There are always new things to teach when it comes to graphic and web design. This is Denni’s first year back from having her son, and she could not be happier to return.

Denni will help Sheridan PRCC students walk away with a better understanding of how to make visually pleasing PowerPoints, personal logos, business cards, brochures and more. Helping students of all skill levels get ready for the workplace is her mantra.

What is your educational background?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Education. Afterwards, I started getting into web design and learning that on my own. I took a few courses in design and started to work for a web design company on the side. A lot of my web design knowledge came from on-the-job and self-teaching.

What design programs did you teach yourself starting out?
It all started with Photoshop. After that, I would open any program on my computer and just search the internet on how to use it. I had a friend who was really into computers and I would always go over to his house and ask him a bunch of questions like, “what’s an operating system?”

What advice can you give PR professionals in regards to design?
Don’t be afraid to try out new programs. Some people are afraid to touch a computer, but you just have to play around with it. Also, you should always keep learning and growing with the programs. You don’t need to learn every little technique, but just knowing what is possible can help you in the future.

How did you feel coming back after having your son?
I was a little nervous at first, but honestly, it’s been great. This PRCC class is a great group, so that makes it easier. Coming back also reminded me that I love teaching and I had nothing to be nervous about. I’m happy to be back at Sheridan.

What do you like to do outside the classroom?
It’s all about the baby, baby, baby! But now that he is a year and a half, he’s starting to sleep overnights, so I can get back to doing normal things. I love to eat! I like to go out to some nice restaurants in Toronto with my husband and try new places that have test menus and chef tables. I also love music! I go to as many concerts as I can.
