It’s not every day that you have the privilege to be classmates with a beauty blogger who is extremely successful.

Cianna Wilkinson, the 23-year-old Oakville native, shares her story on how she created and mastered her blog, Lovely Complex.

Q: Where did you do your undergraduate degree?
A: I did my undergrad at McMaster University and graduated in 2015 with a BA in communications and multimedia.

Q: What inspired the name of your blog?
A: In 2010, I started a YouTube channel by the name of “Sachie,” which focused on vlogs, as well as videos about geek culture, anime, and cosplay.

The following year, I created my blog, “Lovely Complex,” which served more as an online diary discussing topics such as lifestyle, beauty, fashion and travel.

Q: What inspired you to create this blog?
A: My inspiration for the YouTube page came from watching people make videos discussing different topics and thinking, “I can do that too!”

Since my YouTube channel was more streamlined towards geek culture, I wanted a personal outlet to talk about things that weren’t restricted to a certain theme– like makeup, clothing and travel. It was also a place for me to post photos since I love photography.

Q: Did you find it hard to kick-start your blog?
A: I started both my YouTube channel and blog as hobbies and did them for enjoyment, not monetary gain or fame. This was before YouTube and blogs had really taken off as ways to become “famous” online.

The biggest issue I see with aspiring bloggers/ YouTubers is that they want to start blogging, but always hesitate with taking that first step and writing that first post/making their first video. I just went for it. I post on my own schedule and don’t worry too much if I miss a day or have to delay a post. It keeps me from feeling stressed out, and allows me to enjoy creating content without putting unnecessary pressure on myself.

Q: What made you want to come to Sheridan to study PR – Corporate Communications?
A: I work with a few different PR companies in Toronto on campaigns and the whole process really interested me. From launching products, to organizing and hosting events, to planning specific campaigns for companies…it was interesting to view it from the other side (as an influencer). I also love writing and making digital content so it seemed like a natural fit.

Q: How much time does your blog take out of your day?
A: I tend to spend most of my weekend organizing and creating content for my YouTube and blog, so that I can schedule it during the week and not have to worry about it interfering with school work or other projects.

Q: Any advice for people looking to create a YouTube channel?
A: Don’t worry about getting the best or fanciest equipment right away, practice with what you have and see if it’s something you want to pursue. Smart phones have excellent video/picture quality these days – I shot all my old videos on an old point and shoot camera that filmed at 480p!

Find YouTubers you like and study their style. Use what you learn and apply it to your own channel.

We are so fortunate to have you at Sheridan, Cianna!
